Created by the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners in 1988, the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council (AIDTC) oversees the development and marketing of Amelia Island as a world-class tourism destination. As provided by Florida law, the AITDC is responsible for the expenditure of revenues received from the levy and imposition of the tourism development tax.
The goals of the AITDC are to generate visitation to Amelia Island and its attractions/special hospitality industry, thereby increasing tax revenues, including sales taxes and those imposed on the hospitality industry. In turn, those tax revenues may be used to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the community, provide support for beach renourishment, and ensure a viable hospitality industry.
The Council is made up of nine (9) members and the appointments in accordance with Florida Statute 125.0104 are as follows:
• One (1) County Commissioner
• Two (2) Elected Municipal Officials, at least one of whom shall be from the most populous municipality in the county or sub-county special taxing district in which the tax is levied
• Six (6) persons who are involved in the tourist industry and have demonstrated an interest in tourist development, of which members, not less than three nor more than four, shall be owners or operators of motels, hotels, r/v parks, or other tourist accommodations on Amelia Island, subject to the tax and reside in Nassau County.
Current members Lisa West, Barbara Halverstadt and Phyllis Davis have terms that will expire December 31, 2022. Members have expressed their wishes to continue serving on the Council for an additional term.
The Elected Municipal Official representing the most populous municipality in the county or sub-county special taxing district in which the tax is levied (City of Fernandina) is currently vacant. The City of Fernandina Beach will vote for an appointment at their December 20, 2022 meeting. County staff will update the BOCC of the City's appointment. |
