Regional Planning Councils are authorized by Florida Statutes. There are 10 Regional Planning Councils in the State of Florida. The Northeast Florida Regional Council, which covers Regional District 4, was formed in 1977 by an interlocal agreement, pursuant to Chapter 163, Florida Statutes, to “…establish an organization that will promote area-wide coordination and related cooperative activities of federal, state, and local governments ensuring a broad based regional organization that can provide a truly regional perspective and enhance the ability and opportunity of local governments to resolve issues and problems transcending their individual boundaries.”
The mission of the NEFRC is to celebrate the unique assets of Northeast Florida and to engage its people, businesses, governments and organizations. In doing so we:
- Communicate Issues
- Convene Stakeholders
- Collaborate with Others
- Calculate and Analyze
- Construct Solutions
Each County has 4 representatives on the NEFRC Board of Directors as follows:
- 2 County Reps
- 1 Rep from a Municipality within the County
- 1 Gubernatorial appointment recommended by the Governor
Commissioner John Martin and Tax Collector John Drew serve as the County representatives. The municipal representative was filled by former City of Fernandina Beach Mayor Mike Lednovich. As the Municipal Representative position is currently vacant, staff reached out to the three municipalities in Nassau County for recommendations to the NEFRC.
The City of Fernandina Beach, Town of Callahan and Town of Hilliard have each responded with a nomination to the Regional Council:
- City of Fernandina Beach: Vice Mayor David Sturges
- Town of Callahan: Councilwoman Ashton Bishop-Vargas
- Town of Hilliard: Councilman Dallis Hunter
