BOCC AGENDA ITEM

Item Title:Public Hearing for Gas Tax
Date:7/10/2017
Department:OMB
Background:

The Board is discussing the FY 2017-2018 Budget, which includes options related to increasing revenues. One option that has been presented includes implementation of a 5-Cent Gas Tax which would generate approximately $1.6 million dollars in annual revenue. As currently drafted, the ordinance would restrict proceeds only to be used for the construction of new roads, the reconstruction or resurfacing of existing paved roads, or the paving of existing graded roads. Routine maintenance of roads is not considered an authorized expenditure.

At the June 21st meeting, the Board approved to schedule a public hearing for July 10, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. to consider a resolution adopting the gas tax.

Request:
Consider an Ordinance of the Board of County Commissioners of Nassau County, Florida, providing for the levy of an additional five (5) cents of the Local Option Gas Tax upon every gallon of motor fuel sold in Nassau County and taxed under the provisions of Part I of Chapter 206, Florida Statutes; providing for the amount of said tax; providing for the period of time for which the tax shall be imposed; providing for the distribution and utilization of said tax; providing an effective date.
