Date:8/28/2017
Department:Fire Rescue
Background:

Nassau County Fire/Rescue has applied for a Federal grant through the Department of Homeland Security known as the "SAFER" grant (Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response). On July 31st, Fire/Rescue was notified that their application had been accepted. The Board has until August 28th to accept or reject the terms of the grant.

If approved, the grant would provide funding assistance for hiring of 15 firefighters for 3 years. In years 1-2, the grant would provide 75% funding of salaries (25% match), and in year 3, the grant would provide 35% funding of salaries (65% match). The overall grant award for all 3 years totals $1,907,451. The County's portion for the match totals $1,185,714 and there would also be $61,000 required for operating expenses. Additionally, if accepted, the Board cannot cut firefighter positions during the 3 year grant period.

If the Board declines the grant award, the County will not be eligible for any future SAFER Grants.
