The Florida Department of Transportation has set aside $6.4 million for landscaping for the State Road 200 project. Those funds are projected in FY 2021 and 2023. The County will have two options to consider:
Option One
If the Board does not want to contribute financially, FDOT will design the corridor with very basic, low maintenance landscaping with no signage, no special features, temporary irrigation, limited lighting, etc. and FDOT will be responsible for the maintenance.
Option Two
If the County wants upgraded landscaping with input as to the design and the option of permanent irrigation, enhanced signage, lighting, fountains, etc., staff will work with the FDOT consultant to create a design which will be affordable to construct and maintain as the County will have financial obligations. Costs cannot be determined until the plan is complete but the design can be tailored to work within the financial parameters set by the County. This route will require a letter of intent on County letterhead approved by the BOCC.
Regardless of which option is selected, FDOT needs Nassau County to select a theme for the landscaping. Attached are two options: 1) Nassau Coastal Dune Hammock which contains a mixture of Live Oaks, Pines, Cabbage Palms, etc. which mimics the existing native vegetation and 2) Boulevard of Palms which features native and non-native palms. Both designs include a standard and an upgraded design for consideration.
