BOCC AGENDA ITEM

Item Title:Public Hearing for Gas Tax
Date:8/13/2018
Department:OMB
Background:

The Board is discussing the FY 2018-2019 Budget, which includes options related to increasing revenues. One option that has been discussed is the implementation of a 5-Cent Gas Tax which would generate approximately $1.71 million dollars in annual revenue. As prescribed by Florida Statute, the ordinance would restrict proceeds only to be used for the construction of new roads, the reconstruction or resurfacing of existing paved roads, or the paving of existing graded roads. Routine maintenance of roads is not considered an authorized expenditure.

At the July 30, 2018 Special Meeting the Board approved to schedule a public hearing for August 13, 2018 at 6:00 pm to consider an Ordinance adopting the five-cent gas tax. Included at the request of Commissioner Leeper and in the motion was to add language that rescinding the Ordinance would take a super majority to match the requirement needed for adoption. Such language has been added by the County Attorney.
