Attached is a letter from Sheriff Leeper to Honorable Danny Leeper, Chairman and the Board of County Commission wishing to remove $3,000 from the Crime Prevention Trust Fund to donate $1,000 each to West Nassau High School, Yulee High School, and Hilliard Middle-Senior High School. This donation will assist the High Schools with transportation to “Grad Night” in Orlando, Florida in April 2020. This is a special drug and alcohol free event for their senior class that is well chaperoned by school staff. The message of the evening is that young people can have fun without drugs or alcohol and is centered on anti-substance abuse education, providing students with information and entertainment.
Every senior will be required to attend a drug and alcohol abuse awareness class conducted by their School Resource Officer. Each student will sign that he/she attended the class and will remain drug and alcohol free, which will reduce these types of crimes that occur within Nassau County.
Pursuant to Florida State Statute, Section 775.083, the County in consultation with the Sheriff must expend monies from the Crime Prevention Fund for crime prevention programs in the County. As such, I am requesting that the County approve the use of $3,000.00 with $1,000 each being donated to West Nassau High School, Yulee High School, and Hilliard Middle-Senior High School.
