Item Title:Sheriff Donation to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Nassau County

Background:

The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Nassau County is a youth mentoring program for those that come from traditionally underserved communities. Their one-to-one youth mentoring has been shown to have a significant and positive impact on the lives of children. Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters were 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to begin using alcohol.

 

Pursuant to Florida Statute, Section 775.083, the County in consultation with the Sheriff, must expend monies from the Crime Prevention Trust Fund for crime prevention programs in the County.

Request:
Sheriff's Business - Authorize use of $2,500 from the Crime Prevention Trust Fund to be donated to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Nassau County for the mentoring of youth from traditionally underserved communities with domestic troubles. Funding Source: 01031521-549036 CRMPV.
Financial/Economic Impact to Future Years Budgeting Process or Effect on Citizens:
Florida Statute authorizes the use of Crime Prevention Trust Fund monies for crime prevention programs. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Nassau County helps to provide positive adult intervention for at risk youth. These positive interactions reduce the risk of the youth  becoming involved in criminal and self destructive activities.
